The eosin is the Zsolnay Factory world-famous, unique product. Its making necessitates a very careful and complicated manufacturing process. This is the only place in the world where products are made in this way. Its main crux is the metal-oxide based reduced glaze, which is baked twice onto the basic body in the manufacturing process of eosin. European ceramic makers started to research the mystery of reduced glazes, known from oriental arts from the middle of the 19th century. After long-lasting preparations Vilmos Zsolnay commenced to produce this metal-based reduced glaze from 1893 which became known with the name of "Eosin". Shortly after the first, deep red eosin, products in other colors and with decoration appeared. The mystery of the magnificence of eosin is that colors and light, die to the changing effect of reducing atmosphere are reflected differently on each article. The richly-decorated Zsolnay eosin is the most delicate kind of ceramic products.
With our hand-painted porcelain products we intend to play a role in forming artistic, exceptional table-setting and interior design. The handmade porcelain products are the primary and the most characteristic bearers of the traditions of more than 100 years. The most distinctive and spectacular action of the manufacture of products founding the reputation of the factory is the handmade decoration. This operation is not done with porcelain paint, but with colorized, unleaded glaze. This is what makes the decoration statuesque, colorfulness and uniquely bright. Despite the high temperature baking, contours remain clear. Cultivation of traditions is well-represented by manufacture of outpinked ornamentations. This exercise requiring considerable manual dexterity is the most brittle rough manufacturing operation which leads up to the final shaping of our most valuable products.
